Welcome from the Chair

It's my pleasure to invite you to the Law @ Work Conference 2018. Now in its third year, this one-day event will provide a forum for practical insight and advice focusing on issues of legal significance to employment practitioners, human resources professionals and people managers.

This year we're sure to see some rather significant changes in employment law from the Labour-led coalition as they work to deliver their post-election commitments and agenda. This includes restoring pre-National employment provisions as well as creating new initiatives aimed at empowering unions and addressing inequities in the workplace. We've also seen some notable employment and health & safety cases come through the courts in the past year, including Prasad v LSG Sky Chefs Ltd and Salters Cartage, providing further clarity on complex employment arrangements and the trend of increased penalties. In addition, the Court has signaled a new approach to the quantification of compensation, by means of "bands", in WDHB v Archibald.

Our speakers will address these issues in a practical way, explaining their impact on both employers and employees. The conference will also provide guidance in areas that continue to raise concern for employment practitioners, including privacy in the workplace, drafting settlement agreements and effectively navigating the disciplinary and investigation process. Expect a day of lively discussion and the opportunity to remain up-to-date on legislation, regulation and compliance.

I look forward to meeting you at the conference.
